What is Konfabulator?

Konfabulator is a cross platform environment (Windows/Macintosh) that allows users to run very small, typically single purpose applications called widgets. These range from the useful to the frivolous: widgets that display the current weather, display the cheapest gas prices in the neighborhood, display what movies are currently playing, or converting distance into furlongs per fortnight.

Konfabulator can be downloaded from www.konfabulator.com. Visit the widget gallery on the site to see the wide range of widgets available, then be prepared to enjoy a whole new aspect of computing.

Remembrance Widget

Remembrance a widget that will display the name of a Canadian soldier who died on the current day during the Great War. The displayed name will be updated with a new name on a periodic basis (nominally every 3 minutes). The names are drawn from the Canadian Great War Project database. The Canadian Great War Project can be accessed from the right-mouse click context menu.

Clicking on the name of the person will launch the default web browser and display known information about the individual

Various characteristics of the widget are customizable, including how frequently the display is updated, the colour of the text and either a white or transparent background.

The Opacity of the window can be adjusted in the "Window" preference panel.

Requirements
Konfabulator 2.0 or greater and an Internet connection.

The Remembrance widget can be downloaded here.

Installation
Copy (or download) the widget to your default widget locations (User/Documents/Widgets on a Macintosh, My Documents/My Widgets on a PC). Double click on Remembrance.widget and the widget will be launched. Note that the initial connection required to display the name may take 15-20 seconds.

Note: To keep the widget visible at all times, go to Preferences, Window panel, and set the Window to "Topmost".
