Honour Roll

Men from Hespeler, Ontario

The following information was extracted from a journal kept by a local man who recorded the names of soldiers from Hespeler, Ontario (which is now part of Cambridge, Ontario). It is not know who created the book or why it was created. Some of the names are repeated, a few have been left out, and some are there because they had a connection to Hespeler but may not have been living in the town at the time of the war.

Hespeler was a small, southern Ontario town located in Waterloo, County about 50 miles west of Toronto. It was home to a large woollen mill (Robert Forbes Mill later Dominion Woollens and Worsteds) which employed over 700 and many of the workers came from England.

A very rural town, Hespeler had attracted the interest of a orphan home called Smyly Homes of Dublin, Ireland. It opened a receiving home for children in town and placed them out mostly as farm labourers or domestics. These children were often called “home children” by many Canadians.

Hespeler’s population at the out break of war was about 2,500. In 1973, Hespeler, Preston and Galt were amalgamated into the city of Cambridge.

Column one and two are as they appear in the book. Column three, ‘Serial Number,’ and column four, ‘Additional Information,’ have been added to provide more details on each of the men.
