Whenever there are errors that crop up with any of the site search pages, I get an eMail, so I can track down the problem, and hopefully correct it quickly. Today I got one such eMail that was a "deja vu ... all over again" experience. The error came from the myHeritage.com site, which bills itself as a site that aggregates information from a number of the top geneological sites (1103 in the sample search I did).
I had a series of errors from this site about a year ago, and started to look at what they were doing. My basic problem was that they had written their own access to the site, without my knowing about it, and it was causing errors. I sent them a polite eMail, suggesting that they should ask permission before using information from the site, and that their current mechanism was causing problems. I received no response from them.
Looking at it now, it appears that they have changed their access, circumventing the block I put in.
So, since this is a community project, I'd like to open it up to you folks. The Canadian Great War Project was created to provide free access to information, and I guess this is another way to get exposure for the site. You are the ones who are creating the bulk of the information, so it is fair that you have your say. My bias against MyHeritage is that it is 'leaching' information ... getting it without asking for permission, a problem that I feel is all to prevalent on the internet today. Also, that it causes me a bt of extra work, but I can deal with that. Finally, I dislike that they have never responded to my eMails, leading me to think that they feel that it is a"right" to access other peoples work.
So, my personal feelings aside, should we let MyHeritage continue to access the Canadian Great War Project, or should I re-block their access?
Let me know what you think.
