Lieutenant Edward Wallace Waits Watling, MC. Citation: “For conspicuous gallantry and initiative during an attack. After the final objective had been reached he led a small party and rushed a material and munitions dump beyond, capturing sixteen prisoners and a large quantity of stores and munitions. Throughout the operations he set a splendid example of coolness and devotion to duty to his men.” September 1918// Drocourt-Queant Canal// 10th Bn

10 Apr 1915 enlisted in CEF in 26th Bn and served at the front with that unit. On 13 Sep 1916 he transferred to 145th Bn from 26th. During his second tour at the front he was awarded the Military Cross and later the bar to the MC. His son Lloyd would also receive the Military Cross in WW II.


In 1985 he was posthumously inducted into the NB Sports Hall of Fame as "the best all-round athelete ever produced on the Miramichi"
