Uploader's Notes: Son of John Gliddon and Mary Gliddon (nee Baker); older brother of Russell John Gliddon (Service No. 334636) My Great-Uncle was Captain George Clarence Gliddon, the Medical Officer of the 10th Battalion.
On the afternoon of April 22nd 1915 he, along with Majors MacLaren and Ormond ,also of the 10th, were riding their horses near Brielen when the Germans started shelling and they noticed "a cloud of peculiar colour,(greyish, yellowish and greenish) darker near the ground, and lighter near the top".
They hurried to the Brigade headquarters where an "odour of a strange nature was noticed" and "the windows of the room were all smashed from compression" from a near miss. The 10th were subsequently ordered to move to the west of St. Julien and at 11:45 P.M. attacked Kitchener's Wood, losing 623 out of 816 including almost all of their officers in a battle that didn't last 2 hours.
On May 4th, Capt. Gliddon was standing outside his aid station observing an 'aeroplane' flying overhead, when a bomb it had dropped exploded nearby. He was wounded severely "by a disc from the bomb'', and he died of those wounds on May 11th. He is buried at Bailleul Cemetery. Robert Gliddon, London, Ontario
