For conspicuous galllantry [sic] on September 15th-16th, 1916, between Pozieres and Courcelette, during the attack he carried material and messages under a intense shell fire to the new front line trenches in Courcelette. He brought back valuable information and throughout the day urged on his comrades engaged in similar work.

First Bar to the Military Medal

For conspicuous gallantry at Courcelette on September 26, 1916. He volunteered to go out under very heavy fire two hundred yards in front of our line to a detached post, and succeeded in bringing back valuable information. He also brought back several wounded under heavy fire. This N.C.O. has on several occasions displayed marked and determined courage in face of the enemy.

Description:

Distinguished Conduct Medal

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a night raid, when he led his section against three strong hostile posts, clearing each out and overcoming heavy resistance. He personally accounted for five of the enemy and captured two prisoners, as well as accounting for an unknown number of the enemy in a large dug-out with Stokes bombs. His fine leadership and great courage carried his section through to their objective, and entailed heavy losses on the enemy.
