RESEARCH INFORMATION
Son of Richard Lipsett and Esther Lipsett (nee Plews)
Served in the British Army in the Northwest Frontier Campaign and in the Boer War in South Africa (27426). He was the original commanding officer of the 8th Battalion and rose through the ranks to become the General Officer Commanding the Canadian 3rd Division. He was well liked by all ranks. By September of 1918, Lieutenant-General Currie wanted the Canadian Corps to be commanded by Canadians, and as Lipsett was British, Currie and Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig agreed to transfer Lipsett to become the General Officer Commanding the British 4th Division. Six weeks later, Lipsett was killed in action. He was the 59th and last British General to die during the war.
