Details of Death:
While crossing a trestle bridge over the canal which ran through the camp at about 8.15 P.M. on November 16th 1917, he fell from the bridge, his head hitting some stones on the bank and his body then rolling into the water. When the body was recovered it was found that death had been caused by his head hitting the rocks.
Herbert Hill White's WWI War Diary notes for Nov. 15th, 1917 (actually Nov 16th:)
"Nov. 15 - While No. 4 platoon was waiting in the cars to start for camp Fritz sent a shell over and killed two of the boys and wounded a number of others."
It would appear that Bert assumed the two deaths were related to the shelling.
