Description: From the Regimental Diaries:
On 15/8/17, on Hill 70, as a platoon sergeant, this N.C.O. displayed great gallantry and coolness in establishing the forward posts. After his Company Objective had been secured, he did most efficient work in dressing and evacuating wounded and disposal of prisoners-of war.
On 16/8/17, in the attack on the CHALK PIT, he was placed in command of the extreme right flank post of the Battalion, at the most advanced point of the whole attack, this post was counter attacked no less than 4 times, the enemy massing for attacks on other occasions, and on one occasion actually getting behind his post, but due to the splendid leadership of this N.C.O. the post held its position and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. His control of Lewis Gun and rifle fire at this post was all that could be desired. The holding of this post undoubtedly saved the situation, and also saved the battalion many casualties.
