Description: From the Regimental Diaries:
On 15/8/17, on Hill 70, this soldier went into the attack as a No. 2 of a LEWIS GUN section and when the No. 1 and three of the crew became casualties, he took command and carried the gun to the final objective. On 16/8/17, he was in charge of the section in the attack on the CHALK PIT, and before reaching the objective he was severely wounded but handed over his gun in good order, giving clear instructions to man taking over the gun. His courage and cheerfulness inspired his men greatly.
