On 15/8/17, on Hill 70 near LOOS, after the capture of the CHALK PIT, this man and four others were detailed to hold the most advanced post. They were subjected to heavy artillery and Machine Gun fire, and they were under direct observation of the enemy snipers. This party by their skill and daring obtained superiority of fire over three enemy machine guns, causing their withdrawal or abandonment. They also inflicted many casualties on the enemy when he was forming up for counter attacks.
