Description: From the Regimental Diaries: On 16/8/17, on Hill 70 after the capture of the CHALK PIT, this soldier with four others were told off to hold a most advanced post. They were subjected to very heavy machine gun and artillery fire and under direct observation of the enemy snipers. This party, by their skill and daring, obtained superiority of fire over the enemy machine guns, causing their withdrawal or abandonment. The fearlessness of this man, and the skill and determination displayed in holding this post was of the highest order.
