Description: For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty on 21st August, 1917, this N.C.O. when the men on his left were held up by a strong point, under heavy M.G. fire and sniping, led a bombing party against this point. Being unable to penetrate this fortification with bombs, he established a block in the trench and held it against heavy bombing attacks from the enemy. His personal bravery and leadership were of great assistance in enabling our men to establish themselves.

After all the Officers of the company had become casualties he showed great initiative in taking command, and displayed marked ability and coolness in controlling his men under an intense hostile fire. Thanks to his leadership the final objective was stormed. Though wounded early in the action, he remained with his company for thirty-six hours, supervising the consolidation of the captured position with untiring energy, and directing the efforts of his men under the most difficult and dangerous conditions.
