Military Medal (Courcelette)
Description: For conspicuous gallantry at Courcelette on 26th September 1916, as Company Lewis Gunner. In a detached post after capture of enemy trench he was isolated with two or three others on our extreme left. The Germans were in the same line of trenches, but he handled his gun with the greatest bravery and efficiency, thereby contributing largely to the holding of our position till the enemy were driven out on our left some hours afterwards.

Distinguished Conduct Medal
Description: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Although twice wounded during the attack, he pluckily carried on with his Lewis gun section, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy, and on one occasion rushed out into the open to take a most important message off a runner who had been killed, and returned to the trench with it under heavy rifle fire. The success of the operation was largely due to this prompt and gallant action, and his personal example had a most inspiring effect upon his men.
