Listed on the Nominal Roll of the 25th Battalion and served as the Medical Officer of the battalion. Served 27 years in the Medical Corps prior to WWI.

Obituary from the Canadian Medical Association Journal, April 1937:

Dr. John Addy Sponagle, of Middleton, N.S., died on February 19, 1937, aged seventy-six. Dr. Sponagle was born in Parrsboro, N.S., and graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, in 1883. He went overseas with the 25th Battalion as a colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and served in England and France during the Great War. Upon his return to Halifax in 1918, he was placed in charge of Camp Hill Military Hospital there, a position which he held for several years before retiring to Middleton. Mayor of Middleton for two terms, Dr. Sponagle was a diligent worker for the town and prime mover for the newly-finished addition to the Soldier's Memorial Hospital there. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. B. Reagh and Mrs. J. A. Reagh.
