Author of book "The Great War as I Saw It", which describes his experiences as a Senior Chaplain and the loss of his son Captain Henry Hutton Scott. He also published 13 books of poetry.

[Honourary Captain Army Canadian Chaplain Service 14th Battalion Headquarters Mobilized with the 8th Royal Rifles at Quebec City as regimental chaplain on August 15, 1914. Promoted to Honorary Captain and attached to the 14th Battalion for administrative purposes. Sailed with the 14th Battalion aboard the SS Andania from Quebec City to Devonport, October 03-14. Attached to this unit for administrative purposes. He was ordered attached to Number 2 General Hospital at Salisbury Camp on February 04, 1915 but avoided reporting there. He stowed away to France with the unspoken approval of his brigade commander, sailing with the 3rd Artillery Brigade aboard SS City of Chester from Avonmouth to St Nazaire, February 11-15, 1915. On August 31, General Alderston, GOC 1st Canadian Division, appointed him Senior Chaplain of the 1st Canadian Division. He was promoted to Honorary Major on December 01.

January 01, 1916 he was awarded the first of four Mentioned in Despatches. Two weeks later he was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.

March 06, 1917 he was promoted to Honorary Lieutenant Colonel. June 18-29 he was granted leave to Paris. October 20 to November 10 he was granted leave to Rome and arranged a small tour to include several enlisted ranks. This leave is described in his memoir. On December 28 he was awarded his second MiD.

In March of 1918 he was granted leave to England. In his memoir, he described the depressing changes the war brought about in London and Edinburgh, Scotland. A month after his return he was awarded his third MiD. On September 29 he was wounded in both legs by shrapnel. He was evacuated to the 1st Casualty Clearing Station. On October 01 he was transferred to the 20th General Hospital at Camiers.

He was granted leave from September 28 and discharged from hospital. He was admitted to the Quebec Military Hospital as an outpatient from October 20. Ten days later the Quebec Medical Board found that he was permanently partially disabled by his wounds and recommended that he be discharged.
