Red Deer News - 11 July 1917, pg. 1:
A letter from Pte. Cecil Carswell states he is again reported fit for duty, and he has been attached to the 16th Reserve Canadian Battalion at Seaford, Sussex, England. He did not go over the top with the boys as he was struck in the arm with a piece of spent shrapnel the afternoon before, and his arm was badly bruised, and he was unable to work his machine gun. He was ordered back to the dressing station, and next morning he felt well enough to re-join his regiment. As the boys had already advanced, he attempted to join them and was shot through the nose and put out of action.
