Private Frederick Stephen Pitts, 473168, 65th Bn Canadian Infantry died 1st March 1916 and is buried with honour in Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, Kent. Frederick was born in Lincolnshire 1866 but in 1885 we find him working in Paddock Wood, Kent, where he met and married his wife Frances, who was born there. Emigrating to Saskatchewan in 1905 he built a log cabin and set himself up as a postmaster and named the settlement "Paddockwood", no doubt in honour of his wife. He enlisted in the Canadian Infantry on the 6th August 1915 and was sent to Europe. He appears to have lowered his age, claiming to have been born in 1871.
