A number of Canadian soldiers were executed in the 1915-1918 period. It was typically stated that it was for murder, desertion or cowardice, but in some cases it was probably to serve as an example to others in the regiment, and was more likely to occur if there were discipline problems in the battalion.
More information about these men are can be found on the Canadian Shot At Dawn web page (the 2 executed for murder are not listed) or at
Stephen's Study Room.
On December 11, 2001 the Canadian Government entered the names of the 23 Canadian soldiers executed for desertion or cowardice on page 598 of the Canadian Book of Remembrance.
