A name that looks like R. W. Freestone is written in ink on the back of this real photo postcard. It is possible that one of the men in this photo is Sgt. Roy William Freestone, 337867. He enlisted in Toronto on April 10th, 1916 in the 67th Battery Canadian Field Artillery. His next-of-kin address was: 120 Lippincott St., Toronto, Ontario. The other two men are unidentified. The faux background canvas set over cobblestones indicates that it was probably taken outdoors by an itinerant photographer working near the front lines. The photo was found in Toronto in 2005. M. I. Pirie private collection. |
